The Ngomeni Shipwreck located 500metres off the coast of Ngomeni village is the oldest sunken vessel found in sub-Saharan Africa. is believed to be a Portuguese galleon connected to Vasco da Gama's armada. The wreck rests at a shallow depth of 6 metres and it has an intact cargo including Elephant tusks, copper ingots, cinnabar, pottery and cannonballs. The National Museums of Kenya. and international archaeologists have been actively excavating the site. The authorities are turning the location into sub-Saharan Africa's first underwater museum.
