Menengai crater is one of the largest and best-preserved volcanic calderas in Rift valley region of Kenya formed around 200000 years ago. It reaches 2,278m above sea level and it plunges over 480m deep. It is known for producing high silica and explosive eruptions. Menengai caldera, unlike other volcanoes, is dry though geothermal steam vents and underground heat sources are much active. It is currently a key site for geothermal energy development.
