Frå Setesdalswiki

Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa and the second largest fresh water in the world, with a rich geological and human history. The modern lake basin formed about 400000 years ago, when the earth's crust shifted and blocked west flowing rivers, creating a shallow depression. In 1858, British explorer John Hanning Speke became the first European to reach the lake and named it after Queen Victoria. He claimed the lake was the true source of the River Nile, a theory confirmed later by Henry Morton Stanley in 1875.
