It was constructed by the Portuguese between 1593 to 1596 with Ciarati Batista Giovannias the architect. Its purpose was to control strategic trading port of Mombasa and defending against Ottoman and the local forces vying for influence in the region, thus securing Portuguese interest along the coastal Kenya. Today, Fort Jesus is a UNESCO world heritage site recognized for its historical architectural and cultural ssignificance. Vistors can explore the Fort cannons, ammunition rooms, dungeons and galleries which testifies to its storied pasts and the resilience through its centuri0esof warfare and trade dynamics.
