Dedan Kimathi
He was born 1920 in Nyeri county, central Kenya. In 1951, he joined other freedom fighters in an armed independence movement, which later came to be known as Mau Mau. He was considered the most feared among the field marshals who led the movement. He was part of the unit called Kenya Defence council, which he set about organizing armed attacks against the British colonial government. He was then put on trial and later executed in 1957 where his body was dumped in unmarked grave at Kamiti maximum security prison. A street in Nairobi, Kenya's capital has been named after Dedan Kimathi. Dedan Kimathi University of Science and Technologyand Dedan Kimathi stadium in Nyeri are amongst several institutions that honour the legendary Mau Mau fighter.
